Words hold a powerful significance for marginalized, othered groups. As someone assigned the gender female, words have impacted my behavior, sexuality and the way I consider other women.
In this series, I paint quotes I have been exposed to by other people and even words I have spoken myself that in my ignorance harmed members of my sex. Confronted by these words on the pristine painting surface, I digest their meaning, what it is that bothers me about them and how they have shaped my experience as a gendered other. I then paint over the words completely and finish the piece in my way, while my contemplation of the quote continues.
In the act of covering the words, I give myself power over them and a deeper understanding of why I want the words to disappear.
